specializations courses for foreign students

Interview with a foreign student Eric Cruze from USA.

Eric, where did you come from and what did you do before?

I have a glass studio in Chicago, making fused and slumped glass tableware and lighting. Previously, I attended the Appalachian Center for Crafts, and worked for several glass artists.

Why did you come to study to Kamenický Šenov school?

I came to learn about Czech glass techniques and materials.

How did you get information about possibility to study in Kamenický Šenov?

I found the school's website. There had been an American student previously at the school, which confirmed the possibility of coming here as a foreign student.

Did you get proper information?

Yes, after contacting Professor Janak.

What did you expect and how your expectations were filled?

My expectations of working with skilled and knowledgeable Czech glass artists, and learning about Czech glass, were very much filled.

Would you recommend our school to the other students in your country? Why?

Definitely. The Glass School at Kamenicky Senov is an excellent place to learn glassmaking skills and experience Czech glass culture.

Was your stay long enough? How long it should be concerning efficiency and students from your country?

I attended the school for 4 months. It was a good amount of time to learn about mold-making and glass casting. Other techniques, like engraving, might take more time. The school was very flexible in accommodating my schedule.

How was the accommodation and food?

I had my own room in the old students' dormitory - comfortable and inexpensive. Czech food is good and hearty. The beer is excellent.

Was the school staff and teachers assistance big enough?

The teachers were very helpful and knowledgeable. Most spoke English, which made studying here much easier.

How would you evaluate equipment at the workshops where you were working?

The equipment was extensive and professional. There were several large kilns, and a great coldworking studio.

What is one thing you would like to change about this study?

One slight difficulty with living in Kamenicky Senov is the isolated location - for a longer study period, it might be worth having a car.

Was the time you spent here worth the cost?

Yes - it was an outstanding experience, at a reasonable cost.

Would you like to come again?

Yes, I would.
